When sad life events got in the way, Copywriter and Coach, Genny White almost didn’t finish the No-Stress Money Plan but I don’t let people go that easily.
I knew Genny from years ago when we worked in parallel on the same book series for Collins. Fun fact: I’ve made more money from 3 years of investing than my Speaking Skills book made me in 10 years. Anyway, when she wanted to join one of the earlier rounds of the chilled investor, I was really happy to meet her for real.
Feeling like she was hurtling towards retirement with little to show for years of work, Genny was a self-confessed hippy who had always eschewed material wealth. (Like a lot of us in ELT then!)
So a course on investing might not have been the first thing she expected to be doing but she was enjoying the sessions and homeworks when she suddenly lost a very close family member and finances were the furthest thing from her mind. She let me know and promised to complete the course in her own time from the recordings as it was fully live back then.
I’ve read many other testimonials praising both the course structure and Nicola’s skills as a coach, and I completely agree with all of them. However, what impressed me most about the course was Nicola’s caring attitude to her students.
To be honest, I know I might not have kept my promise [to finish the course]. Nicola took the time to follow up on several occasions. Not in a pushy way, but in a friendly and supportive manner. She kindly offered to do a 1 to 1 session with me (which I deferred, as my head wasn’t in the right place at that point). In the end, she offered me a place on a strategy workshop with another cohort. This gave me the push I needed to complete the course, and to think out my strategy in preparation. If Nicola hadn’t taken the time to follow up with me, I’m sure I would have kept pushing investing to the bottom of my to-do list.
That could have been the end of it but Genny went on to not only implement the practical aspects of the course, but to make some major life changes too.
What Genny did after the course
First, she opened a pension account on a platform we looked at during the course and stuck all her savings in there. Remembering my advice, she stuck tight through the market turbulence that followed in 2022-23. Now, it’s recovered and she’s up again by 9%. At the beginning, she was cautious and her monthly contribution was small, but now she’s more comfortable, she’s doubled and has plans to double it again at the end of 2025.
She now puts all her tax money in accounts that earn interest or win money where she’s made over £500 win most months, from money that she used to just leave sitting doing nothing waiting for the tax man to take it. She’s also developed a saving addiction and uses a special type of rounding up app that means she’s saved £3600 in under a year (!) which is something I don’t even explicitly teach on that course.
But, once financial awareness sets in it changes how you look at money. Genny told me she feels much more positive about it, more in control, and much less in denial.
On top of that, she proved a doubting teenage son wrong too which I imagine could be the most satisfying thing of all.
When I told my teenage son I was doing your course, he thought it was hilarious. He also thought it sounded like a huge scam. He wrote “Mum’s investment + price of course” on the family whiteboard, and then wrote ‘Mum’s ROI’ next to it. He was obviously expecting a big fat zero, or pretty close. Let’s just say he’s asking me for financial advice now!
What surprised me most when I caught up with Genny to help me write this case study was that things she learned on this course became a catalyst for other changes in her life.
Valuing money more [was a] change in my money mindset [that] has also transferred to my work. I’m a lot less likely to settle for a poor deal now. Taking the course was the first time I’d done something for myself in a long time.
I’d been stagnating tbh. I loved the learning experience so much that I signed on to Rachael Roberts’ course, started a new business and now have even more money to invest as a result. Talk about a virtuous circle, eh?
Of course, I’d seen Genny become more active on Linked In, and couldn’t miss her new and gorgeous professional brand photos and website, but I had no idea any of that had come about in any way connected to me. I’m thrilled for her!
So I can’t promise to change your life but I DO promise to change your finances 🙂
